Plant description:
Sappan wood -Caesalpinia sappan- is a shrubby or small sized tree, grows up to 10 m tall and the trunk is 14 cm diameter; bark is covered with many prickles, grayish brown in color. Leaves are dark green, arranged alternately, bipinnate and 20 to 45 cm long and 10 to 20 cm and wide, rounded at apex. Flowers are borne in terminal clusters. Seeds contain in a bean or pod which is ellipsoid and flattened, tapered at the apex, 18-20 mm long and 10-12 mm broad. The powdered or small piece of heartwood is boiled in water is used as drinking water.
