Green gram

Scientific name of Green gram: Phaseolus mungo

Name of Green gram in different languages:-

English: Mung bean or Moong bean

Sanskrit: मुद्ग-mudga

Hindi: मूंग-moong

Tamil: Passi Parippu

Malayalam: Cherupayar-ചെറുപയർ 

Plant description:

Green gram is an erect, annual herb of the pea family  grows to a height up to 100 cm, bushy,1 to 2 branches. leaves are simple, leaflets small, green ovate pubescent, flowers are yellow with purple tinges, seeds are shining green, cylindrical, 9 to11 seeds contain in a pod, length up to 7 cm.

 

 

Medicinal uses: To treat oedema, anxiety, fever and headache.

Useful plant parts: seeds

The chemical contents: Vitamin C, calcium, B Vitamins, phosphorous, magnesium, potassium.

It is used as an ingredient to prepare the Ayurvedic medicines like:-

Brihat Ashwagandha Ghrita

Karpasasthyadi Velichenna

Kayasthadi Varti

Balahatadi Thailam
