Holly mangrove

Scientific name of holly mangrove: Acanthus ilicifolius L.

Sanskrit: हरीकुसा harikusa

Hindi: हड़कत harkata

Malayalam: ചക്കരമുള്ള് chakkaramullu, ചുള്ളിക്കണ്ടൽ chullikkantal, പയിങ്ങാച്ചുള്ളി payingngaachchulli

Tamil: கழுதைமுள்ளி kalutaimulli

Plant description

It is a shrub like plant grow up to 2 m tall, commonly found in marshy areas, seashores and water front area, the leaves are spiny, the flowers are found in clusters, which is showy and the petals arelight violet in color, flowering is Dec. to may.Seeds are pos which explodes when it is mature, and seeds propels about 2 meters distance.

Medicinal uses:

To treat rheumatic disorders, treat burns, and used as a blood purifier.

Chemical contents:

Acanthicifoline, oleanolic acid, quercetin, glucopyranoside, trigonellin, β-sitosterol, lupeol, saponin, glycosides.


Medicinal Properties:

Antiseptic.
